Two and a half

This pretty much sums up life here with a two and a half year old. The Little Mister is constantly dumping out his toys and I'm constantly trying to pick them up. He accomplished this in about 2 minutes. It took me the rest of the day to get it cleaned up because he kept thwarting my efforts.

He loves to build forts and hide under blankets and pillows. He hates loud noises and insists on hiding behind the couch pillows whenever I vacuum. It only lasts for a minute though and then he goes to the closet and gets his own vacuum and "helps" me.

He talks so much and uses so many big words. Most of them he has gotten from TV, like hypothesis. But whatever, he also learned to count to 10 in Spanish by watching Dora so I guess what they say about young kids not learning from TV isn't correct.

When he is really adamant about something he will say it in English and Spanish. So, if he wants me to get something down and I'm not doing it, he will then yell "abajo, abajo". Sometimes he uses Spanish words that I don't know. I guess I need to start watching more Dora and Diego.

He loves his friends and every day he asks where we are going. He is getting more social and actually starting to play with kids more rather than just next to them.

He's starting to sing along to some of the songs I sing to him and is even learning to say his ABC's (he learned all the letters a while ago but not in order). Except he says "A,b,c,d,y,f,g..."

He counts all the time. He loves to count. Some of his books that are about colors or other things, he has changed to counting books. Until this week though, he thought the number after ten was "twelven". I was actually hoping that would last longer but I guess not.

He really does love Baby Sister although he doesn't love to share his toys. Every morning he wants to come with me into her room when she wakes up (he is the first one awake in the house most days) and he says in the cutest voice "Baby Sister, did you wake up?" and then tries to climb in her crib.

He really has the best memory. He can remember things from months ago...like Granddad's flashlight and that it was snowing the last time he talked to them, or his straw hat that broke two months ago and he had to throw in the trash. The other day he kept asking to read the "Nabey" book. I didn't know what he was talking about until he found the book and brought it to me. On the cover is a picture of a little white dog, like Maeby. He hasn't seen her since probably September or October. But then, he does remember things that I wish he would forget...like the time I freaked out over Baby Sister's missing hair bow. Now he periodically asks me if I found it...or the orange golf ball that we keep trying to take away, but then he will remember and throw a fit until we search for it and find it.

He's so tough, he rarely cries when he gets hurt. But he does cry when he gets in trouble and when he can tell I'm getting frustrated he says a timely, "I wuv you, mom" and it fixes everything.

He usually insists on taking toys with him to bed. They vary, but he has some favorites...like his golf clubs, flashlight, cars, etc. One time it was the garlic presses. The cutest though is not that he takes them with him, but also brings them back out when he wakes up. One morning just after Christmas he came running out of his room dragging his guitar and magna doodle all the way. Then he climbed into bed with us toys and all.

Grandma Burkhart

My Grandmother passed away in January, just a few days before her 96th birthday. She was my last living grandparent. My sisters and I traveled to California for her funeral. I took Baby Sister with me. It was really nice for her to meet her aunts, and even nicer to have some one on one time with her. Just me and my baby girl. I also got to see one of my previous roommates, Lauren, and PJ who doesn't even remember me anymore :(

But more about my Grandma...

The funeral service was really good. There were several musical numbers by her kids and grandkids. If nothing else, she should be proud of her posterity.

My grandparents traveled all over the world and they would always bring us little gifts from their travels.

I spent one summer in California with them. We met them in Utah and I drove with them in their RV back to Riverside, stopping along the way at Bryce, Zion and I think even the Grand Canyon. The refrigerator was stocked with Black Cherry soda. My Grandma and I played cards to pass the time.

My Grandma was also really involved in the community and Scouting. The turnout at her funeral was really quite remarkable, I thought.

She graduated from college, which I suspect was a little bit rare in her day, and taught school for a few years before she got married. I remember having a conversation with her once about how when my Grandpa proposed she was thinking "wait, do I want to do this? I've got a job, I've got my own money, I don't have to worry about anyone else" and I realized that maybe she was a lot more like me than I thought. Of course we both made the right decision.

She left my mom a hope chest full of heirlooms....baby gowns and shoes, handmade items that she or her mother had made. Priceless things. My sisters and I got to each pick out a few things. I got the dress she wore to her wedding reception, with matching hat of course, and a plaid wool coat. I'm not certain, but I suspect at one point she used to be quite stylish. I also got a couple of pieces of jewelry. One is a necklace with blue stones that looks a bit flashier than I can picture her wearing. Maybe it was for a special occasion. I wish I knew.

The last time I saw her was at a rehabilitation home after she had a stroke. She actually seemed quite normal at the time, sitting up and talking. I think she needed a walker or cane to get around though. My Grandpa would go visit her every day and there were several other older people in the home. They sat around eating lunch talking about the "good ole days". It was really cute to see my Grandparents in a social setting like that.

4 & 5 months

Four month stats:

Height: 25 inches
Weight: 13 lbs 11 oz (incidentally this is how much Little Mister weighed at 2 months!)

Likes: Exersaucer, pulling her knees up to her chest and then kicking them back down, smiling, laughing, babbling.

Dislikes: Riding in the car at night, when Mom leaves the room for too long.

New skills: She rolled from her back to her tummy a little before Thanksgiving but was really inconsistent about it (stubborn maybe). On New Year's day she rolled from her tummy to her back.

We also introduced solid foods at about four an a half months. Her first "meal" was oatmeal. After introducing most of the grains, I've given her sweet potatoes, banana, applesauce and squash.
She has met all four of her grandparents now. Brad's parents came to visit this month and my parents were here when she was born and back again in November.

New Year

We hosted a New Year's Eve party at our house.
Complete with party hats and party favors.
We rang in the New Year at 6pm so the babies could get to bed at a reasonable time.

We couldn't keep the Little Mister off the sauce :)
